ACCHS Earns 2010 Challenge Award Certificate of Recognition

Congratulations to the ACCHS math department (Mrs. Kimmi, Mrs. Kramer, Mr. Nathan Smith), peer tutors, para educators, staff, students and parents!

The Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force has named the recipients of the 2010 Challenge Awards. The Challenge Awards are designed to recognize Kansas schools that are making a significant difference in student achievement despite facing significant challenges in school population.

There are two levels of recognition, Certificate of Merit being the top award and Certificate of Recognition for all others recognized in the region. ACCHS earned a Certificate of Recognition for outstanding performance on state assessments in 11th Grade Mathematics that exceeded the normal expectations based on socio-economic status and sample size of those taking the test.

Data gathered through the Quality Performance Accreditation (QPA) process has shown that the greatest achievement gap occurs in schools with a high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches. The schools receiving the Challenge Award have managed to post state assessment scores above what would normally be expected among those serving disadvantaged populations.

“The Challenge Awards recognize schools that provide tangible proof of the long-held contention that all children can learn,” said Charles Volland, chairman of the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force. “These schools are to be commended for overcoming the very real challenges that poverty poses to education.”
