PURPOSE:  The Curriculum Council is designated as a priority committee in the District Strategic Plan. The committee’s primary goal is to facilitate and enhance the district goal of ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE. The main purpose of the council is to develop subject area curriculum that meets Kansas College and Career Ready Standards, is aligned vertically and horizontally, is rigorous, and reflects the high academic standards of the district.
 

College and Career Ready means an individual has the academic preparation, cognitive preparation, technical skills, and employability skills to be successful in postsecondary education, in the attainment of an industry recognized certification or in the workforce, without the need for remediation.
 

Vision: The Curriculum Council of USD #377 will develop a world class, student centered curriculum that is
 

  • Based on research and aligned with the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards
  • Documented and published
  • Delivered according to best practice
  • Continually assessed and refined to meet the needs of students

 


BOARD OF EDUCATION ADOPTION: 

The USD #377 Board of education has adopted this handbook into board policy. The curriculum established in USD #377 curriculum documents is the district curriculum and is to be taught in all classes.
 


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead curriculum development efforts that foster continuous improvement and support learning
  • Review and approve requests and recommendations for curriculum and program changes
  • Oversee textbook adoption, curricular software selection, and management of other curriculum resources
  • Review and update the district curriculum
  • Establish and maintain curriculum alignment and mapping
  • Oversee and maintain current curriculum guides
  • Advise on instructional strategies and curriculum evaluation
     

PROCEDURE:  The Curriculum Council will meet as needed during the school year.   A written agenda will be prepared in advance of all meetings, with a copy being given to the membership prior to each meeting. A record of minutes of the meeting will be kept and provided to the membership of the district and made available to Atchison County Community Schools employees and patrons using appropriate outlets.
 


MEMBERSHIP: The council will be composed of: Department Chairs for K-12 Math, Language Arts/Foreign Language, Science, Social Studies, PE, Art, Music, Counseling/At-Risk and Business/Technology/Vocational Education. The Department Chairs are nominated by the K-12 curriculum committees, with final approval by the Superintendent. The Curriculum Director shall serve as the chairperson of the committee.
